Every morning at 5am, before most of the town is awake, she’s already loading panniers with that day’s loaves. Fifteen years running the same route, on the same bike, regardless of weather.
Why not a van
“I’ve been asked that a thousand times,” she laughs. “Honestly, half of it’s habit, half of it’s that the bike gets me down lanes a van can’t fit down. And it keeps me fit, which nobody complains about.”
The route as a social round
Her delivery round has become something like a moving conversation — regular stops where a cup of tea is waiting, others where she’s the only person some of her older customers see before lunchtime. “It’s not really a job at this point. It’s just my morning.”
The one thing she’d change
Nothing about the bike. But she’d love a second baker to share the very early starts — an ad’s been up for six months without much luck. If you know someone, she’s easy to find. Just follow the smell of fresh bread at dawn.
